Successful submission of new Aqua-tnet proposal

The Aqua-tnet network has successfully submitted a new proposal for continuation of our network, entitled: “Aqua-tnet - Promoting innovation and a European dimension through Lifelong learning in the field of Aquaculture, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management – Thematic Network”. Coordinator John Bostock from the University of Stirling would like to thank everybody for your work and inputs into the proposal, which was highly valued.

Let’s all cross fingers for a positive result, to be announced in June 2011, and now concentrate once again on making the current Aqua-tnet2 a great success!

Aqua-tnet Annual Event 2011 – 8 & 9 September 2011

The Aqua-tnet Annual Event 2011 is now being organised and we request all partners keep their diaries free for the following days:

Researchers give your opinion on your needs and challenges!

In order to fully understand the needs and challenges for Research Institutes, the Research group has designed this survey to carry out a sector wide analysis. The data will be analysed and a report will be produced identifying current practice with regards to training, mobility, lifelong learning and CPD (Career Progression and Development). Conclusions and recommendations on how interaction can be improved, in particular with AQUA-TNET (CLICK HERE to fill out the survey.

WP7 core group meeting, 25 March, Dublin, Ireland

There will be a WP7 core group meeting taking place in Dublin, Ireland on 25th March. The group will be preparing the Language Game which is a deliverable of WP7 Multilingual Issues in International cooperation.

2. Research & Education

QALLL - 1st Report on the Assessment and Mapping of Projects

The first report on the QALLL Assessment and Mapping of Projects has now officially been published and is available on the QALLL website at http://www.qalll.net/downloads/ The new strategic framework of the Council of the European Union stresses the importance of education and training systems in Europe and the role of the member states in this context. Quality assurance plays a crucial role within these systems. The QALLL project aims to highlight good practice and to put forward recommendations in order to support cooperation in this field. Besides, the project will also be able to identify both immediate priorities for the Lifelong Learning Programme as well as long-term challenges for the next generation of the programme.

Call for applications: study visits for specialists and decision-makers in education and training

Are you a specialist or decision-maker in education or vocational training and would like to explore themes of common interest with your counterparts in other European countries or better understand specific aspects of another education and training system? Apply before 31 March 2011 for an EU grant to participate in study visits between September 2011 and February 2012. Call for applications: MG4U Summer course "Marine Evolutionary and Ecological Genomics" - 15-29 May 2011

MG4U (Marine Genomics 4 Users) is providing a Summer course "Marine Evolutionary & Ecological Genomics" on 15-29 May 2011, at Station Biologique de Roscoff, France. The course aims to introduce genetic and genomic approaches for the analysis of biological diversity, evolution and adaptation at the species and population level in the ocean. The target group is PhD students (at least in their second year) and post docs with a solid knowledge in phylogenetics and/or population genetics. Students with an applied background (e.g. aquaculture, blue biotech, fisheries, nutrigenomics) are encouraged to apply. The course will consist of lectures, tutorials and computer based exercises in various subjects.

The course fee is paid by the MG4U Network and includes a welcome reception, excursion (incl. lunch) and farewell dinner. On site accommodation at the SBR guesthouse is included. All participants pay their own travel and board (self catering is possible. For more information please click here for the announcement. Call for abstracts: NAIRTL 5th Annual Conference/Galway Symposium on Higher Education - Engaging Minds - 9th & 10th June 2011

NAIRTL's (The National Academy for Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning) 5th Annual Conference will take place in conjunction with the CELT Galway Symposium on Higher Education on 9th & 10th June 2011 in NUI Galway. The focus of this conference is on active student engagement in the learning process.  In this regard, you are invited to submit an abstract(s) for consideration.  For further information, including the submission form and registration details, please go to www.nairtl.ie/conference.  The deadline for abstract submission is 31 March 2011.

Call for abstracts (extended): ESSIE - ANNUAL ASSEMBLY 2011 “Systemic Innovation of Education”

The Annual Assembly brings together all the distinctive individuals from the ESSIE Society. It is a unique occasion for open interaction, learning and adoption, and provides the opportunity to explore new educational visions of the future, which ESSIE is determined to shape with YOU. Call for abstracts: AQUACULTURE EUROPE 2011

The conference, organized by EAS in cooperation with the Federation of Greek Maricultures (FGM), and Hellenic Centre for Marine research (HCMR) will address vital questions affecting the development of Mediterranean aquaculture over the next decade. EAS-SG teaser 13 February 2011

Do you know this feeling? You find a new subject in your research or you work with a new species or technique and you have to start from scratch with virtually everything. What you really need is a clearly and straight-forward written manual with good explanations and illustrations of the problem and lots of solutions! This featured coloumn of EAS-SG's teasers will give you exactly this kind of stuff you need!

This week's recommended literature is the "Walleye Culture Manual" by R.C. Summerfelt (ed), North Central Regional Aquaculture Center, USA. It is about culturing walleye (Sander vitreus), a freshwater percid fish species similar to European pike-perch and covers virtually all aspects from reproduction and breeding to larvae culture and fingerling handling. The EAS-SG made a photo competition among the members of their facebook group and the 12 best pictures were chosen for the EAS-SG 2011 calendar. It features a wealth of impressions from the world of aquaculture, fisheries and marine sciences. Along with our promo-activity, the calendars were sent to the lucky winners. Congratulations!
