Patrick Sorgeloos recognised by highest EAS Award
At the opening plenary session of the AQUA 2012 event, co-organised in Prague by the European and World Aquaculture Societies, Patrick Sorgeloos, Director of the
Laboratory of Aquaculture and the Artemia Reference Center of the University of Ghent in Belgium, was presented with an Honorary Life Membership of EAS.Honorary Life Membership is the highest EAS award and is given to those persons that have had a marked impact on the development of European aquaculture. Since 1981, EAS has bestowed this award on only 10 persons, including such names as Eric Edwards, Bernard Chevassus-au-Louis, Peter Hjul, Colin Nash and more recently, Courtney Hough and Pascal Divanach.
The award was presented by the EAS 2010-2012 President Yves Harache, but announced by 2008-2010 President Selina Stead, leaving the EAS Board of Directors after 12 years. Selina introduced the awardee as a household name in aquaculture – not only in Europe but across the whole planet – and hence one of the reasons why EAS wished to make this award at its global event, AQUA 2012, where he was also a member of the Steering Committee.
She described Patrick’s exceptional vision, when, at about the time of the founding of EAS in the 70s, he realised the potential of a small crustacean that would affect aquaculture production in Europe, but also throughout the world, on species that required special larval rearing strategies to break a severe bottleneck to their commercial production. He founded the Artemia Reference Center and the International Study on Artemia, so important for world aquaculture. He created one of the global leaders in specialist aquaculture feeds and he is probably the world’s most travelled aquaculture expert, having been to just about every country on the planet where aquaculture is practiced.
He created the ‘standard’ for a Masters course in Aquaculture and for specialist training on Artemia. More recently, he pushed the main industry players to create the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform that has just completed its Vision and Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, presented at AQUA 2012.
On calling Patrick to receive his award, Selina spoke of her pleasure and personal honour to make the presentation of Honorary Life Membership to him. This was echoed by Yves Harache as he presented an honorary plaque to Patrick.
For his part, Patrick dedicated the award to his beloved wife ‘Mama’ Magda and to her love, care and affection to the students, past and present, of the laboratory of aquaculture in Ghent. Source: http://www.easonline.org/component/content/article/223

Innovative training delivered to the Mariculture industry across Greece, Spain and Turkey
Five innovative training courses aimed at the Mediterranean Mariculture industry have recently been delivered across Greece, Spain and Turkey through the EU 
Lifelong Learning Project INTRANEMMA (Innovation Transfer Network for Mediterranean Mariculture).This pioneering project led by producers associations in Greece, Spain and Turkey recently delivered targeted courses to Fish Vets, Health Managers, Production Managers, Hatchery Managers, Feed Company Managers, R&D Managers and PhD Students amongst others. The training was developed and delivered by a panel of industry experts based on identified shared knowledge gaps to address the training needs of the Mediterranean Mariculture industry. FORCE - 2nd Partners’ Meeting, Venice, Italy, 10th – 11th December 2012
The FP7 project FORCE (Fishing and aquaculture-Oriented Research Capacity in Egypt) which launched in November 2011 and runs for 30 months will hold its 2nd Partner’s Meeting in Venice, Italy, from the 10th – 11th December 2012.
FORCE is designed to enhance the capacity of the Egyptian National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, NIOF, to carry out research activities aimed at supporting the implementation of sound and science-based policies for the sustainable development of fishing and aquaculture in Egypt, as well as in the whole Mediterranean North African region.

ARRAINA - 2nd Partners’ Meeting, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain, 11th – 13th December 2012
The FP7 project ARRAINA (Advance Research Initiatives for Nutrition and Aquaculture) which launched in January 2012 and runs for 60 months will hold its 2nd Partners’ Meeting in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain, from the 11th – 13th December 2012.ARRAINA brings together a multidisciplinary consortium from 21 institutes (research, industry and SMEs) based across Europe guided by the ethos of maintaining European aquaculture industry productivity while addressing the issues of nutritional value, food safety and environmental impacts.

MaCuMBA: new FP7 project on Cultivation Methods for Improving the Biotechnological Applications of Marine Microorganisms
MaCuMBA, funded under the EC 7th Framework Programme, started 1st August 2012 and will run for 48 months. MaCuMBA aims at improving the isolation rate and growth efficiency of marine microorganisms, which so far form an almost untapped resource of biotechnological potential. MaCuMBA applies innovative methods and the use of automated high throughput procedures for optimisation of growth and the use of intelligent, nature-mimicking approaches to cultivation.
The challenge to cultivate microorganisms is critical for the future of marine microbiology, microbial ecology and microbial biotechnology in addition to any industrial innovation based on these, particularly in the fields of food, bio-energy, environmental remediation and human health.
MaCuMBA is led by the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) and will kick off with a Start-up meeting in Amsterdam on 29-30 October 2012. For more information, please contact Marieke Reuver (marieke@aquatt.ie).
STAGES - Science and Technology Advancing Governance of Good Environmental Status
The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) is designed to deliver “Good Environmental Status” (GES) in EU marine waters by 2020. This Directive requires that Member States with marine territories employ measures to achieve and maintain GES within a clear timeframe and according to eleven key descriptors which will be used to define environmental status.
However, there is a significant knowledge deficit which may affect full implementation of the MSFD and the achievement of GES in EU waters. The STAGES - Science and Technology Advancing Governance on Good Environmental Status – project, funded under the EC 7th Framework Programme, is designed to directly address this knowledge shortage. The project has two overarching goals:
- to synthesise the information from research projects on major MSFD themes
- to develop a platform to ensure that the knowledge generated through European science and technology can be channelled to a broad range of relevant end users, to inform and facilitate implementation of the MSFD and the achievement of GES.
The project started on the 1st of September 2012 will run for 24 months. The STAGES consortium, consisting of 8 institutions from 7 countries and led by Fundacion CETMAR from Spain, met with representatives of DG Environment on 5th September to present the various Work Packages that will be used to achieve the objectives of the STAGES project. The meeting also afforded the STAGES consortium an opportunity to discuss where DG Environment’s assistance and advice would be beneficial to the consortium.
The STAGES kick off meeting was held in Brussels on 27th and 28th September 2012.
EATIP Vision online & Presentation Event on 30th October
The European Aquaculture Technology & Innovation Platform (EATIP) Vision document is now available online at http://www.aquamedia.info/PDFFLIP/EATIPVision/index.html#/16/. The official presentation event “The Future of European Aquaculture” of the vision will be made in Brussels on the 30th of October 2012, in the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. The document expresses the vision of the EATIP and explores how the challenges facing its achievement can be addressed by using technology and innovation.It has been developed through the widest consultation ever made on European aquaculture. This consultation effort, which was supported by the European FP7 project ‘Aquainnova’, has led to the development and identification of forecasts and needs of the sector in 2030. These are summarised in the ‘Vision and Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda’ that has been prepared by the EATiP, which will be presented in detail for discussion.
The presentation event will explain the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of these developments, the implications for the European professional and research sectors and the need to integrate these issues with different policies and strategies at the National and European levels. Experts from the aquaculture profession, research and development, the European Commission and other stakeholder interests will be present to debate and answer the key questions raised by results of these actions.

AQUAMED Multi-Stakeholder Platform (MSHP): first meeting on 20-21 November 2012 in Rome
AQUAMED organises its first meeting of the AQUAMED Multi-Stakeholder Platform (MSHP) for the Mediterranean Region (Southern Europe and North Africa) in Rome on the 20-21 November 2012.AQUAMED, The Future of Research on Aquaculture in the Mediterranean Region, is an EU Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) project which aims to develop a cross-functional strategy for sustainable aquaculture research in the Mediterranean region. The MSHP is being created to ensure that in the future a multi-stakeholder group identifies and prioritises research and innovation needs necessary for a sustainable Mediterranean aquaculture industry. Its aim is to rationalise research programming in order to avoid duplication and fragmentation of research efforts and to stimulate long-term cooperation and coordination across policy makers, the aquaculture industry and RTD performers in the Mediterranean region.

Short Fish Health Course at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, 22-24th January 2013
This three day course for fish farmers and associated professionals will take place on the 22nd – 24th January 2013 at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling. The course consists of both theoretical and practical classes and caters for all levels of fish farm staff who wish to improve their knowledge of fish health and related topics. PhD studentship: Available now at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, United Kingdom
Targeting surveillance in Scottish aquaculture using reported mortality and transmission network structure to minimise impacts of infectious diseases - This research projects aims to develop a model for optimal surveillance
of salmon diseases with the most efficient use of sampling effort. The
project
will involve assessment of association between infectious diseases
and observed patterns in reported mortality, taking into account factors
such as
time of year, water temperatures, site history and stage of the
production cycle. This analysis will use historical industry data on
mortality and
site factors to search for useful risk indicators. Based at the Institute of Aquaculture at Stirling University, this
project would be equally suitable for a student with a mathematical,
epidemiological, or statistical background with an interest in
aquaculture and fish diseases, or for a numerate biology student with an

Final Marie Curie Calls of FP7
The 2013 “People” Work Programme contains details of
the 2013 Marie Curie Actions Calls. These are the final calls for Marie
Curie Actions in FP7. After the last call has closed in August 2013,
there will be a break in funding until the first calls of Horizon 2020
are launched in 2014. The full Work Programme for “People” Marie Curie

A database for regional fisheries assessments for increased transparency and enhanced data quality
The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is now hosting the Regional Database FishFrame (RDB-FishFrame), a regionally coordinated database platform for fisheries assessments. The database, which covers fisheries in the North Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, addresses fishery management needs related to the European Union Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). RDB-FishFrame will ensure a standardized and regional approach to fisheries assessments, increase transparency and documentation of data processing and allow for more standardized statistical analyses of stock assessment input data. The database will also make it easier for countries to share data and results, and provide information to decision makers in a streamlined way.
“The establishment of RDB-FishFrame at ICES will facilitate a transparent and regional approach to the collection and processing of catch and landings data, resulting in significant improvements in the quality of the fishery-dependent data used in stock assessments, and more cost efficient data collection”, says Katja Ringdahl, Chair of the RDB-FishFrame steering group.
FEAP's new website launched
Launched on the 17th September 2012, the FEAP website has been completely renewed with a new logo and house-style, and containing all relevant components of the public Aquamedia site. WWW.FEAP.INFO will be a dynamic site focusing on European aquaculture, regularly updated with the latest information, publications and news of interest.

SeaHealth ISSUE 4: Should we Label EPA/DHA content of Farmed Oily Fish?
SeaHealth-ucd is a newsletter produced as part of the outreach programme from University College Dublin, Institute of Food and Health (UCD-IFH). UCD-IFH is strategically placed at the interface of food and health and is extensively researching both areas. For more information visit http://www.ucd.ie/foodandhealth/.
SeaHealth-ucd is aimed at all those in the seafood sector including consumers. Its purpose is to promote the consumption of seafood based on healthy properties but in a more informed way.
